  1. Everyone, I've got some big news! Thanks to Sonic Lore Database over on Discord, I've obtained what appears to be the Complete Collection of the Sonic Manga, published by Shogakukan. That's right, all the Japanese Originals are now available to you or anyone that's curious on what it holds. This is the same series that Amy and Charmy originally came from. Along with other characters that were designed with the assistance of Sega of Japan themselves! This is truly a monumental moment for all Sonic fans, and if any of you can read Japanese or know someone that can translate them, let us know. What secrets does this long dormant series hold? Let's find out! https://t.co/ZUBRFtEsEd https://t.co/HO54u1bj0X https://t.co/TUeQ1RTSGH https://drive.google.com/file/d/13O04Yv7bhLuLPk4pFfSS0mQYtB5l9BA-/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AznOPSlMf3CSxrujwThQqnUyUXP51SNE/view?usp=drivesdk https://t.co/tIticzlisn
  2. We've had this topic on just about every Sonic Series that has a topic on it, so naturally it's about time we had this for The Games itself. Now in WWYDD we can see just what would we do and change to Sega Sonic itself, so get creative, grab those rings, and clear these questions and answers we post and see. I'll start us off with a very tricky question, one that's almost unthinkable for many. If you made Sonic and he couldn't be a hedgehog for whatever reason, what would you make Sonic be?
  3. First released back in 2013, Coming Home was the very first major stories I wrote, on my own, without help and following a strict sense of continuity...even if the continuity I was referencing was never established in the first place. Something I HOPE to rectify with all this reboot stuff I'm working on. Regardless, it was what started my attempts to make bigger stories, including The Surgeon...which went nowhere, Sonic: Forced Evolution...which no-one read and I cancelled, and the reboot stuff that I have yet to work on. After way too long, as well as contemplating rewriting the thing from scratch, I decided to just post the old story here, see how well it goes down. If at all. You're Here http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/?do=findComment&comment=4165 http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/?do=findComment&comment=4171 http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/?do=findComment&comment=4175 http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/?do=findComment&comment=4179 http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/?do=findComment&comment=4184 http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/?do=findComment&comment=4193 http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/?do=findComment&comment=4195 Some things to note: This story was done back in...well, 2013. Before I had learned to plan these stories out...or spell correctly. I've tried to correct as much grammar and spelling mistakes as I possibly can. Apart from that, the story will not be edited besides minor edits for the sake of clarity, like Freedom Dies With Me was. This was what it was like when I first put it up on Fanfiction.net. So if parts fail to make sense...well, it didn't make sense at the time, either. Oh yes, and...well I know I've said I dislike the use of the word "cringe" when it comes to critiquing but I certainly cringe when I READ half the stuff in this thing, so... None of this is really canon anymore, due to the reboot. I might still write some stories in the preboot world, hence why stuff like this will be tagged as Old World material. Oh yes, and there might be some swearing and very...uncomfortable ideas and sequences within. So, not exactly NSFW but caution is advised while reading. Ready? Here we go... /////-----///// "Mr Highcastle...are you afraid of god?" "No. Our god is Master, and he is harmless...but I'm afraid of you." Perry Martin presents COMING HOME Chapter 1: The Start of Darkness KNIGHT ISLAND Off the coast of The United States October 23rd, 1922 7:32PM Mr. William Needlemouse "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" came the first of the voices, a young one, filled with joy, wonder and an overpowering sense of boredom. "Not yet, little one..." another voice said, older and yet still young, but weary and low pitched, laced with a British accent and a tire of the daily life events, "But we're close. So very close..." There was a gurgle and a groan as light, or what little of it, flooded the man's eyes. William slowly arched his neck upwards to the same sight as he had seen a long time before. He was on a boat in the middle of nowhere, nothing but wild, dark blue waters in every direction. The winds were strong and the waves fierce, rocking the boat all over the place and keeping William focused on his balance. Ahead of him were three people, all hedgehogs just like him. One was old, around the same age as William, which was around 24. He had dark fur, causing him to blend almost seamlessly against the darkly lit night that over-shadowed the sea surrounding them, with a sort of "skunk stripe", following along his eyes, from his brow to the top quill, which contemplated his purple eyes and rather dark, but still light skin. He was wearing a yellow raincoat and matching hat, but William could see he was wearing a waistcoat under that, with a white shirt and black tie, along with his pinstripe trousers and monocle. Next to him was another male, younger and smaller than the other, around 15 or so. He was a very dark brown in colour, the darkness surrounding his eyes (along with sitting with his back to William) and masking his eye colour, instead showing off his quills, which were short, bushy and rather badly kept. He was dressed much more strangely, with some sort of strange cloth jacket with metal teeth and trousers with many pockets and metal buttons, made of a rather strange material. He wore woollen gloves that had the fingers cut to the middle and metal glasses that shone a radiant blue, even in this environment. Beside him was a small child, which William had recognised as his own son. He was a radiant blue, just like his father, with a coil of brown "hair" across his eyes, acting as a fringe. His own eyes were an even lighter blue, almost aqua, and he was wearing a small waistcoat and matching suit, as was common for such a grand party. The younger and older males were both working at the oars of the boat, rowing slowly but strongly, pushing the water aside with great strides and sending jets of water along and across the sides of the boat, a touch of white to the otherwise dark setting. The child was just tugging at the younger's woollen jacket, as if demanding something. "So, this Rose woman..." the older male spoke up from the gloom, his voice thick and wallowed in the middle class, "What makes one say she has much importance to you. Is she your girlfriend or something?" The older one chuckled at his joke. The younger still had his face away from William, but the strain and the low volume of his voice made it clear he was weary and tired, but struggling to stay awake for something that seemed important. "No..." he sighed, "It's just...unfortunate that some of my test subjects decide to make a break for it, that's all. Me and someone else have been sent to this rightly marvellous party and...retrieve her. A Mr. William Needlemouse, I think." "And..." William spoke out, his voice normal, but otherwise timid, "And that'll be me...right?" "Indeed, he seems the right man for the job," the older spoke again, all three seeming to ignore William, "I've gone through some of his old case files. Ex-Freemason, before someone turned him away, worked as a private detective. Only one child, and that'll be young Jules here..." The younger stared at the child that still tugged at his jacket, but never-the-less continued his indefatigable rowing, "Yes...good kid'll go far. His...eyesight needs attending to, however." "Oh yes, don't want to make him LOSE it or anything..." the older continued chuckling, "It would cause something horrible no doubt...he might become half machine or something!" "Heh heh...yeah, don't press your luck..." The younger reached under his seat and pulled out a wooden box, with brass engraving and corners with metallic screws. He gave this to Jules, who then gave this to William. The box's engraving read "MR WILLIAM NEEDLEMOUSE. Bring me the girl ALIVE". William opened the box and slowly inspected the contents. There wasn't much, just a picture of the girl and her profile: AMELIA ROSEANNE AGE 17 FEMALE HEDGEHOG GREEN EYES, PINK FUR ANSWERS TO SONIC William smiled to himself. Sonic sounded like a very good name to him. Another thing inside the box was a key, fairly standard, but with the initials AR along the edge. The last thing was a pistol, a Browning M1922, as was standard for the time. William wasn't the biggest fan of guns, but it was only needed if Amy decided to fight back. William cocked the slide of the gun and put it in his shoulder holster, safety on, with a wide grin on his face, "Nice..." "So, this William..." the older continued, "Does he hold any significance to you? Why pick him?" "You make him sound like your typical meathead," the younger sighed once more, "No. He is...special to my cause. It's probably best you don't know." "Yes, but what makes him so different?" Older asked, brow raised in question. "Because he doesn't row," Younger shrugged back. "He doesn't ROW?" "No...he DOESN'T row..." "Oh..." Older mused, "I see what you mean...kinda..." The younger looked up to the background behind him. In the distance, getting bigger and more brightly lit with every passing second, was a castle, huge and majestic, covered top to bottom in delicate engravings and candlelit windows. The being chuckled in satisfaction, "We've arrived." "Finally!" Jules chirped in, turning to William, "We're here dad! Isn't it wonderful?" The boat soon pulled up to the dock and wedged itself firmly in the mould. The owner of the castle, a Mrs Eliza Prower, had designed new-fangled mechanics designed to ease the course of life. The mould was so the boat wouldn't need attaching to the dock, which saved rope and rot. The younger was the first to climb out, straining in the effort as he dragged his wrecked body onto the soggy wood. He reached down and pulled Jules up next, who emitted an outburst of joy at this action. The older climbed out next, showing no strain or no effort, leaving William the last to leave. As he climbed out, he could see a vast array of cogs that held the infernal contraption working, knowing that if single one of them went wrong, the entire thing would fail. The logistics of the entire thing made his brain ache. 1920's tech wasn't exactly space age. The three hobbled up the long, winding stone staircase towards the castle doors. The doors were three times the height of William and twice as wide. They were a very polished walnut brown with big brass handles and doorknobs. A majestically engraved bell sat near the side, once more hooked to a mass of bits and bobs so it could work. The Prower Family, Charles and Eliza, were complete geniuses and were quite happy about it too. They had designed many advanced mechanisms and contraptions way ahead of their time and had made a rather large fortune selling it to the government for private and public use (though the actual public never got to use it. Obviously). They bought the castle on an island just off the coast of America, Knight Island. There they spent their days inventing new and perfecting old, to keep their money coming in. They used the money on regal and sophisticated parties that everyone wanted to attend, often unveiling new machines in the process. William was beaming with delight on the inside at the mere thought of attending this kind of party, but he was nevertheless a man on a mission to find a young girl who had fallen into strange hands. Strange really. Like that man who went to that flying city ten years previous. The older man was somewhat...familiar. William suddenly jumped with shock at the thought of the man before him, "Oh! Almost forgot! I never got your name, Mister..." "Me? My name's Dewitt Highcastle," the older stretched out his hand to shake William's, "Nice to be assisting you on this adventure." "And you?" Jules poked at the younger. "Me? Hmmm..." the younger paused over his words with caution and scepticism, "Just call me Master. Everyone else does." Master and Dewitt Highcastle. Very strange names, William was thinking to himself. However, such odd names would become entwined in his memory for a long time soon. After the nightmare this "adventure" would bring to him. KNIGHT ISLAND-ABANDONED Off the coast of Mobius Alpha July 5th 2013, 2:12PM Oliver Maruice "Sonic The Hedgehog" Needlemouse and Lowell Theo Highcastle II "The things we take from Miley, huh?" Lowell joked as he kicked the fragile wooden door, "And to think I never thought this place even existed. Sonic shyly sighed to himself. Lowell had only just learned of this place's existence, but Sonic and his family had known about it for time immemorial. It was said to be so majestic so long ago, but a mysterious accident had caused the place to enter a new state of mystery, no two rumours being alike. The castle was shut down finally entering the 1940's and had thus been abandoned for 73 years. The engravings, while still present were almost completely illegible and faded from the cruel concept of time, the once amazing art now nothing more but vaguely interesting shapes and shadows of a previous world. The insides were coated with dust and darkness, damp and cobweb-flooded. A place that shrieked the themes of horror and possession...and, unfortunately, it was the place Sonic and his friend would be spending the next month. This is because while the place was completely empty, the castle was said to be, in one of its many rumours, to have once been the property of the the Prower family, whom which Sonic's best friend Miley was of. It was said they were of great technological importance to the government and thus they were dead rich via selling their tech to the world, but the accident, whatever it involved, screwed up their reputation and forced them to flee the castle and go low-profile, until Miley came along and improved her family name once more. Unfortunately, that's all it was; just another rumour. There wasn't even a will inside the house, at least at the time of inspection. All Sonic and Lowell had to do was find this will and they'll be able to help Miley reclaim her fortune. That, or live there for at least a month. Sonic thought this was the easier and more likely to succeed plan. Lowell didn't even know of its existence. Luckily, Sonic had managed to hide luggage and their girlfriends aboard the boat before setting off. "Uh...yeah," Sonic said awkwardly, trying to find a subtle way to mention such plan, "I suppose. It's a mystery to many, isn't it?" "I thought it was a secret to everybody, but I'll take that too," Lowell shrugged, "Not too bothered about that. Besides, we shouldn't be here long. All we need to do is find that deed and we SHOULD be free...right?" Sonic sighed heavily. It was now or never, Sonic thought, and while he certainly didn't want to do it, it HAD to be done. He slowly inched over to the boat that had dragged the four onto this island and pulled the luggage free from it's hiding place. Sonic's face spoke a thousand words, mainly fear at his compadre's reaction as well as a little confidence at doing the thing, considering the traumatic event that had caused his radical change in personality so many years ago. Lowell's own face twisted into the same grimace it normally took hold of, a mix of confusion and anger. "Sonic..." Lowell asked, puzzled, "Why have you got four suitcases?" Sonic said nothing and simply shuffled backwards, awaiting the inevitable coming in the form of a bellowing scream from Lowell's unusual lungs. Instead, Lowell was hobbling around the orange suitcase, opening its lid with a patterned zipping sound and inspecting his contents. His grimace turned to an even more puzzled frown as he inspected the contents. A couple of extra capes of varying colours and pocket amounts, specially made toothpaste designed for fangs, a red cloth blanket that was extra soft to the touch and an old record by Sully Mcgrenzy, mainly his hit single "My Best Friend Is My Colon"...the switch finally flicked in his head. He threw his gaze at the blue hedgehog before him, who had managed to stand up straight for once. "SONIC..." Lowell said once more, a bigger hint of anger in his voice, "This is all MY stuff! Why?" "Because..." Sonic said timidly, "Because I said that...well...the political state of Mobius Alpha has gone to the red abyss, you know that. The new government says that squatters living in forgotten homes can own it after a month of living in it. That, and we need to do this because we ended up with that bet from Shadow. And we haven't got 1'000'000 Rings. And I'd also like to hang on to my knees if that's alright with you..." Lowell's eyes shrunk to bead-like proportions for a few seconds as the shock of Sonic's words brushed against his mind. "A...a...A MONTH?!" Lowell shrieked in his mix of shock and anger. "Yeah, but it was the only way to do so..." Sonic tried to calm the angered wolf down, albeit to no avail. "A BLOODY MONTH?!" "Well, it ain't MY fault!" Sonic said quickly, getting defensive, "It was you, after all, that got hammered and tempted Shadow to fire an arrow at his own skull via Chaos Portals. After that, he had us over the Sharks. Besides, I don't see why YOU'RE complaining. I've only got enough underwear for tonight!" "Well, THAT'S because you only wear it as Soma!" Lowell was still riled up, but had become remarkably calm in such a short space of time, "That's all you've EVER had!" "...True..." Sonic regained his composure, "Now look, we're stuck with it. Trust me, I'm a master of speed. It'll fly past in no time at all. After all, remember when you were born and then a month old? The time flew past." Lowell's annoyed mind stood him up and replied, "It passed because you had two breasts big as your head at beck and call day and night! Give me that now and I wouldn't be complaining!" "Well..." Sonic kicked the floor with a smug look on his face, "I can give you something similar," he edged his way towards the second suitcase, a dark grey with purple highlights, "You see, I came prepared. Just in case you decided to ventilate me in anger..." Lowell's confused head tilting to the left like a robot powering down gave Sonic the signal he had to show him exactly what he meant. He unclipped the suitcase and opened it with a large creek and a sudden WHOOSH as someone burst out of the bag. It was a female hedgehog, black in fur colour with delicate purple highlights on her fringe and quills. She wore a light grey t-shirt with a black cloth jacket and trousers with a skirt oddly wrapped around her belt, ending in white boots with red bands. The woman sat up in the case, clutching her chest and taking deep, heavy breaths. "Darn you, Sonic!" she gasped inbetween the stinging breaths, "I haven't had a worse trip to nowhere since I ended up on the DeviantArt Fetish Train!" "Sonic, let me get this straight..." Lowell facepalmed, "You locked Kathrine...MY girlfriend...in a suitcase and brought her over here..." "Yeah!" Sonic said happily, giving a thumbs up, "And Frost is in the other suitcase. I thought it was a good idea..." Lowell's face scrunched up into that grimace. He slowly walked up to the beaming hedgehog and stared at him in the face for quite some time. With a sudden burst of speed, he whisked his custom revolver out of his holster and jabbed it firmly to Sonic's forehead, who let out a sudden high pitched scream at this. "Give me yet another reason to blow your head off," Lowell growled threateningly, "Come on..." "Wait..." Sonic started inching backwards and cowering, "Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAITWAITWAITWAIT NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" As Sonic's back slammed against the castle walls, there was a huge roar that shook the very confines of the island to its core, a monstrous and low growl spreading throughout the air. The door glowed with a strange purple haze, causing all three people to ignore the whole "ventilation" thing and stare at it. The doors swung open on their own terms with deafening creaks, showcasing a large, long hall. Lowell slipped the revolver back into its holster and ran towards the hall. He dragged his bare finger along the nearest well and stared at. Something had felt wrong to him, and his check had confirmed this to him. "No dust..." Lowell said, "And no cobwebs. This place looks like it was never abandoned, at least on the inside..." "Didn't Miley said this place was left barren for 73 years?" Kathrine asked. "Yes..." Sonic said with wonder in his voice, "Perhaps someone already owns this place? Perhaps we'll have our work cut out? We should explore just to be certain. Let's go!" Sonic clicked his heels together and sped off in his usual way towards the doorway, wooping all the way. Lowell suddenly pointed to the fourth, unopened suitcase, yelling "Unlock Frost first!" Sonic suddenly skidded to a stop, "Unlock Frost first, right..." and walked back towards the suitcase. Lowell sighed and reached into one of the many pockets on his yellow cape, rummaging around and finally pulling out a large bottle of whisky. He opened the bottle and took a large swig before turning to Kathrine. "Looks like we're in for a long one here..." /////-----//// Return to First Entry: http://freescribesofmobius.ipbhost.com/topic/373-old-world-coming-home/
  4. I originally posted the review in the Anti-Archie-Sonic group on DeviantArt and I have now posted it here with only one change and that is a negative point I didn't realize because I finished writing this review at four in the morning. So if the formatting seems weird it's because of DA. --------- Welcome to Tales from the Sonicverse where I review the Sonic Universe arcs since the reboot. Sonic Universe is a title I believe was launched to help flesh out the Sonic universe as there is only so much you can do while focusing solely on a single team. This has led to a problem of important plot points being introduced in Universe that aren’t adequately explained when they show up in the main title. But overall I believe the title has done its job of fleshing out the comic’s world adequately even if it could be done better. We start with Sonic Universe #55 and we are already off to a bad start with the title, Pirate Plunder Panic. This is most likely a nod to the Universe arc Treasure Team Tango in which all of Team Dark was widely OOC and Blaze was nerfed to shill Amy. PPP was not written by Ian Flynn but by the long-time artist, Tracey Yardley. The issue opens with Blaze giving a narration as to what is going on. Long story short, she is looking for the final Sol Emerald which is being held by some pirates in a ship made completely out of metal. Last we saw of Blaze she had two of the Emeralds but now she has six? Not going to show us the rest Yardley? During this we get Amy knocking away cartoon bombs the ship is firing, Cream saying she won’t hide anymore then she already has, and *sighs* Marine speaking in what I assume to be false Australian slang and forced nautical terms and she lives up to the title given to her by the comic of “Loudmouth Captain”. Whenever she speaks I imagine her voice sounding like someone doing a bad Steve Irwin impression and it isn’t help the fact that she doesn’t have a VA. Blaze orders Marine to bring her ship in closer so she can go aboard the enemy ship with Amy, Cream, and Marine protesting that she cannot go alone. While yelling at Cream, Amy saves Blaze from being hit by a bomb and then apologizes for losing her temper. I actually agree with what Blaze was saying, in this arc she and Amy are the only ones who show any fighting prowess plus I doubt Cream would be any good in a fight and Marine is probably the only one who can lead the incompetent bunch of koalas they call a crew. Plus, she ends up going over by herself anyways. After flying over to the ship, Blaze climbs up the ladder on the side of the ship and ends up running into Bean. Bean the Dynamite isn’t that bad in small doses but he is a major character in the arc and he started to grate on my nerves in the second issue. While Bean and Blaze sneak around on the ship and Marine blows herself up, Metal is informed the Blaze slipped aboard the ship and says he wants the loudspeaker. We cut back to Blaze while Bean gives his only funny line in the arc, “Would it kill you guys to get a continent or two?” Metal makes his ultimatum to Blaze, surrender or her friends die. Blaze tries to keep herself and Bean hidden and he responds by selling her out. When Blaze asks why he points out that he was working with a bounty hunter/assassin the last time they met so why wouldn’t he work with pirates and he is right, Blaze was pretty stupid to trust him. The scene ends with Blaze completely incinerating the pirates and telling Bean he will share their fate. I could go for some roast duck. Cutting back to Marine’s ship we learn that the ship is taking on water and is completely screwed. Then Cream suggests ramming them as it what Sonic would do which make sense considering the ship is pretty much lost, might as well cause as much damage as possible. Blaze surrenders so Metal won’t destroy her friends but she arrives after he finished counting and he says (after shooting it) “A cap’n has to make good on his word” and blows Marine’s ship to kingdom come. Blaze almost loses her cool when a named mook, Buckle, knocks Blaze out with a single blow to the head and then we find Captain Metal is a rebuilt Metal Sonic. Prior to the reboot Metal Sonic was an entire line of robots that were treated as tough cannon fodder, not a single character. Issue 55 honestly wasn’t that bad till the end. All it did was mildly annoy me until I saw Blaze get one shoted. Then I was enraged. Issue 56 opens with Blaze being carried in a cage by the pirates and Metal saying that as the cage is made of tungsten carbide and she won’t be able to melt it. This is a real chemical compound and has a high melting point of 2870°F or 5200°C and she could in theory be unable to melt her way out. As an added incentive to not try anything funny the other named mook, Swackle, uses his cane to send an electric current through the cage shocking both her and Bean who was sitting on the cage, which was kind of funny. We cut to the box containing Marine’s fireworks floating on the ocean and Amy smacks the lid off and Marine just starting freaking out. Amy tell her to stop talking. Yes, Marine if you could please by quiet for the rest arc I’d be happy. After trying to figure out what to do, Cream points out some fins are approaching them and Marine yells that they’re sharks and Amy responds by saying she has a hammerhead for them and jumps straight at a shark. Welp, Amy’s dead, too bad Marine and Cream soon followed and then Blaze does what she should have done just let out a big fire blast and kill all the pirates then break out of the cage at her own leisure. Of course that isn’t what really happens, turns out they were really dolphins and the trio starts riding them to the nearest island as Cheese was able to communicate with them. Back with Blaze, Bean asks Bark to make her a smoothie because she is sad. More importantly we get Metal’s backstory in the form of a sea shanty. Basically a robot doctor was making his normal rounds but when his ship came back Metal was on it and he killed their previous captain and thus is now the current captain. And I’ll admit the Blaze drinking the ridiculous looking smoothie got a chuckle out of me. When Team Rose, cause let’s face it that is what they are, arrives and Marine gets kidnapped the moment they enter the jungle by small creatures that she probably should’ve been able to overpower. “I guess we should saver her…” WOW Amy, just wow! I know I might have given Marine shit but it sounds like you would’ve left her if no one would’ve known. Can we feed Amy to the sharks? After hearing that the creatures are saying, “Help. Fire cat.” Amy realized they were taking them to Blaze. Meanwhile back at Metal’s fortress Metal basically goes, “I have an ultimate weapon Mwahahaha!” while Blaze snarks then tell him she will kill him. Outside the creatures makes a “human” ladder for Team Rose to climb up to the top of Metal’s fortress. Once they make it to the top Metal reveals his ultimate weapon which is the Wily Egg from the crossover now called the Egg O’ War and has cross bones and an eyepatch now. Cream flies Amy over to Blaze’s cage who is now being held by a crane. And Marine walks up to Metal and yells at him. Welp, time to add Marine to shark food pile. And the issue ends with revelation that Bean the Looney Tunes reject stole the Sol Emerald somehow despite Metal being only a few inches away from it the entire time. Issue 56 was terrible as it revealed that Blaze was once again nerfed to shill Amy. It is quite obvious Archie wanted to give Amy her own arc SO JUST DO IT! It probably wouldn’t be any good but at least good characters wouldn’t suffer because of it. Issue 57 opens directly where the previous issue left off, with complete chaos. “It’s been a very tiring day.” with you there Blaze. Out of nowhere Johnny, a villain from Rush Adventure, snatches the Emerald from Bean and flies off. Amy smashes Blaze’s cage after she weakened the bars with heat and the four fly off and were saved by the little creatures again, attacking Metal when he takes aim at them. Metal attacks his own crew and tells them to ready the sub in five minutes and to *sighs* release the kraken. Yardley, references don’t work when forced or lampshaded and you had a pirate go “He’s gonna say it!” which makes the reference really forced. Our heroes are unable to follow Johnny thanks to two of them being unable to fly. So they decide to jack Metal’s ship. We also get one of Yardley’s strengths as an artist as I honestly did laugh at Blaze’s expression when she insisted that she wasn’t afraid of heights. They fly down to the ship and Marine tells them that she I the new captain. When they ask why they should listen to her Blaze incinerates one and Amy compacts one with her hammer which provided some very good motivation. Johnny returns to Captain Whiskers’ ship and hands him the Emerald. If you want to know why I haven’t given them their backstory yet, it’s because I don’t care to. They have never had a proper appearance in the comic before and only appeared in one game, if Yardley doesn’t care enough to give their backstories then I don’t care either if they even have ones. All you need to know is that they work for Eggman Nega, who doesn’t even appear, but are planning on betraying him. Cutting back to our heroes when suddenly Bean and Bark walk up from below deck and Bark’s expression is pretty much how I feel about this entire arc. Bean claims to be captain because finders and keepers and he has the hat which Blaze then burns to a crisp which did get a laugh out of me. Before Marine and Whiskers can fire upon each other, the Kraken appears in between them and they fire upon it. Cream asks Bean to use a bomb to kill the kraken as nothing is hurting it. He agrees to only if he is captain which Blaze immediately agrees to much to Marine’s chagrin. Bean then somehow make an extremely large bomb appear out of nowhere that crushes him during his big speech needing Bark to throw it. The bomb blows up the kraken but Whiskers drops the Emerald which is grabbed by a hand reaching out of the ocean which is quickly revealed to be Metal who is now part crab. Issue 57 was slightly better but overall it honestly felt like it was just unnecessary filler. It felt like Yardley had a three issue story but was forced to make it four issues. Now onto issue 58 and finally the final part of this terrible arc. We open with a Mexican standoff between the three factions until they all yell fire. Blaze quickly flies over to Metal and while fighting him yells how insane he is as the Sol Emeralds are necessary to kept their world in once piece. He responds that his new ship can take him to other worlds so this one can rot. Not a bad plan except you salvaged the ship which means it was already defeated once and thus it could be defeated again. Once again Blaze it defeated much easier then she should’ve been and is taken to the Egg O’ War. Amy and Cream follow after while the others fend of Whisker and his crew. Inside Metal’s ship Blaze wakens in time to see Metal use the Emeralds to have his ship take to the skies again. We cut back to outside where Whisker and his forces retreat but not before sending a missile straight through the hull of Marine’s new ship. But Marine and Bark spy Bean on Metal’s sub yelling shiny robots running at the two named mooks who quickly abandon ship just to get away from him saying the long walk back to their base would be worth it, with the two of you there. So Marine is now the proud captain of a submarine. Back with Blaze getting the remaining Sol Emerald power drained out of her forcibly when suddenly we have Cream yelling out Metal is a big meanie serving as a distraction for Amy to smash Blaze’s constraints. Then we get a fight were Amy and Cream almost beat Metal who was about to deliver a killing blow until his pincer is suddenly melted. We see what melted him was Burning Blaze, Blaze’s super form, who then proceeds to melt Metal into a pile of slag or so we think. Turns out Metal uploaded himself into the Egg O’ War and starts gloating while Blaze burns a hole through it and tells Amy and Cream to leave as she has some eggs to fry. She goes into the core of the ship and unleashed a huge flame blast that destroys the engine and then flies outside and unleashed a fire blast that goes completely through the ship which proceeds to sink into the ocean but the eye of the ship lights up again for an obvious sequel hook. Blaze then goes to the sub where she thanks everyone for their help and is going to send the home which is almost messed up by Bean trying to grab the Emeralds until he is forcibly restrained by Bark. A second after they leave Marine starts crying in a very cartoonish manner and Amy remarks something about their world feels off probably referencing that this is their first time on Mobius, because it needs a name goddamn it, since the reboot. Issue 58 it simply an anti-climax. Metal and his weapon were built up as a threat but were taken out rather easily even if it was by a super form. Positives: 1) It’s a Blaze story. Blaze is a character who I think honestly needs more love and is worthy of having her own spin off even if it would only be a mini. 2) Everyone is in character. Unlike TTT where a third of the cast was OOC everyone was in character in this arc even if it hurt the story or made me hate them. Character’s abilities weren’t accurate but their personalities were. 3) Finally the conflict isn’t forced. Unlike TTT where they made heroes act villainous for no real reason, in this arc no one is forced to be the bad guy simply because the arc needs one Negatives: 1) We skipped Blaze's story. Last we saw Blaze only had two Sol Emeralds but now she has six? Yardley why did you skip the rest of Blaze's story? 2) Blaze was nerfed. If Blaze kept her real power level she would’ve been able to incinerate all those pirates easily. In addition this issue continued the idiotic Blaze gets knocked out in one blow thing which only works when it doesn’t happen all the time then is starts to tug at the willing suspension of disbelief. 3) As a result of said nerfing the arc’s conflict continued for far long then it should have. Blaze could’ve just melted all the pirates since nothing in the arc implies that they have any resistance to fire with two of them incinerated by normal level Blaze. Melt the pirates then search the ship at your own leisure 4) Amy is shilled. Amy is a lot more competent in planning and fighting then she really ought to be. Amy has no special training and has barely any experience, being acknowledged as a rookie in both the old and new universes. 5) Metal is a terrible villain. Captain Metal is pretty much a pirate with delusions of grandeur. Even if Blaze couldn’t stop him he would’ve probably died upon arriving at the first worthwhile world to loot. 6) Amy is a designated hero. When Marine was seemingly getting kidnapped Amy say, “I guess we should saver her.” I know I found her very annoying but I would not leave her to die while it seems like Amy would have if it wasn’t for Cream being there. 7) Marine walked straight up to Metal. This is just completely idiotic and could have easily gotten them all killed. 8) Bean was insufferable in this arc and most of the good humor involved other’s reactions to him. 9) The only characters I didn’t want to feed to the sharks were Blaze, Cream, and Bark 10) Forced reference. 11) After all the buildup the Kraken is killed in a few pages after its introduction 12) Captain Whisker and his crew appear out of nowhere with no introduction. This is especially egregious as they have only appeared in one game, not even in any of the spin offs, and their previous appearances in the comic were at best cameos. 13) Why was Whisker and his crew even in this? 14) After all the buildup the Egg O’ War was destroyed in two hits. Talk about an anti-climax. This arc was nothing but terrible and disappointment. Blaze was nerfed to put Amy in the spotlight and none of the villains lived up to the hype. If this is an example of Yardley’s writing on average, I honestly want him to stick to just the pencils. My recommendation is to take a page from Blaze’s book and burn this arc. Next time on Tales from the Sonicverse we will look at a sequel no one asked for nor wanted with the most 90s named villain since the Dark Ages with a surprisingly more positive review.
  5. I think it's safe to say Boom as a sub-franchise in general...didn't work. Not only were the games a complete mess (partly because SEGA didn't learn their lesson from 06 about rushing games), but the show was painful and drowned itself in memes (well, so does the main Sonic, to be fair) and the comic...well, the comic was alright. It was all set up to sell toys, and it shows; this sh*t feels like it was all from the 90's. But that does ask the question. I suppose. Did Sonic Boom do ANYTHING right? What made you laugh? What made you smile? What even made you go "Okay, that's actually pretty cool..."? Say below and see if there's anything worth salvaging in Sonic "Memes and Merchendise" Boom. I'll start; 1. The episode with the Eggman's tomtato soup. A funny episode in and of itself, with a rather amusing twist. That, and I think the interactions between Tails and his plane were VERY funny (still would've preferred the Tornado, though. I mean come on, it was in the first episode and you made a model for it! I thought this show was supposed to be on a budget). 2. Eggman himself. Not the BEST incarnation of Eggman (that's honestly still up to debate), but certainly one of the funniest. Sure he's not in any way capable or competant (indeed, he's quite pathetic), but he was a blast to follow. And Mike Pollock's voice for him is irreplacable. And, well, compared to the Archie version of Ivo Eggman "The only reason I'm not a thin stain on the ground is because SEGA gave me Plot Armour" Robotnick, he's practically a godsend. 3. Tails x Zooey. It's not the BEST romantic relationship for sure, but the fact Tails got another shot at romance with SEGA's poor history to it in the first place is intruiging. Especially compared to Sonic (whose romances nearly killed both the games and the comics and is now locked behind a mandate), Knuckles (his got scuppered by legal issues), Amy (who SEGA is perfectly fine with having all the brains of a bag of bricks) and Sticks (...unlikely to get into a romantic relationship, to say the least). 4. I also kind of like Zooey, even if she's just a female version of Tails with no personality beyond "Tails' Girlfriend" (and even that didn't last long). But she's still not FINO, she's not Cosmo the Talking Vegtable ("ME. IT'S ALL ABOUT ME. I HAVE BECOME CHRIS, DESTROYER OF FOCUS!") or Cream (did those two share ANY sort of chemistry in the main canon?). 5. Perci. Just a shame they never used her. Properly, that is. 6. The concept of the entire village being Mobians like Sonic and the others (and not those weird alien things like in Underground). A lot easier to beleive than it being just Sonic and Tails (and whatever friends are allowed this week) and the rest being humans; that is NOT enough for a stable population of Sonic's kind. Though this IS sullied by the fact that, uh, EVERY SINGLE ONE of those villagers is hopelessly dumb and beyond unlikeable. That's...about it. Any others you wish to add to this list?
  6. It has come to my attention that many of you have never read Sonic's UK Comic equivalent to Archie Sonic, that being the famous and amazing Sonic The Comic, published by Fleetway around the same year, if not earlier then Archie Sonic. It has been talked about but never really looked into by many in the fandom despite a good chunk of the characters being somewhat well known, however today I'll finally enlighten you all to what I consider the best Sonic comic ever made. The comic itself doesn't go in an exact order at first, but I'll give you a brief low down on what it's about. The story is quite a contrast to other Sonic Stories released at the time, as it's origins come from SoA's Sonic Bible, when a kind scientist named Dr. Ovi Kintobor finds a brown hedgehog named Sonic they quickly hit it off. During that time two experiments go awry, Sonic uses Kintobor's new power sneakers and during a lab incident becomes the Super Fast Blue Hedgehog we come to know of. When Kintobor is testing an experiment out with the (then known) 6 Chaos Emeralds, upon tripping on a cord with a rotten egg in hand, he turns into the demented and insane Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Afterwards Sonic then has to stop his former friend from turning all the inhabitants into his Badnik Army and stop him from taking over Mobius. Sonic does so multiple times with two special occasions being the events on Sonic 1 and 2, literally. Along the way he ends up befriending Miles "Tails" Prower, or Pixel Brain as Sonic loves to poke fun at him, Johnny Lightfoot, the straight man of the group, and Porker Lewis, the always nervous techie of the group. After a few issues Sonic tells his friends what made Sonic and Robotnik who they are, when Robotnik ends up pulling a fast one of them and sends them 6 months into the future, where all of Mobius is offically Ruled By Robotnik, or RBR as it's known as. After that they officially form The Freedom Fighters, lead by Sonic to take Robotnik down and free Mobius. Sounds MUCH different then what your used to doesn't it? They end up recruiting new Freedom Fighters and allies along the way, such as Amy Rose who is unlike any other Pink Hedgehog you know of, the short tempered Shortfuse the Cybernik, and another techie Tekno the Canary. Along the way they meet Knuckles the Echidna, and fight against Metallix the Metal Sonic. There's a lot more to the series as well with different story arcs, new strange worlds, and a bunch more familiar and new characters alike. You really gotta check this series out on your own and discover what it holds, that little synopsis up there doesn't do it justice. Granted the series isn't perfect and there are some later issues or so that aren't up to par with the rest of the series, but it's a small price to pay for a mostly consistently great series. If your afraid that it will have similar problems to Archie Sonic did during it's run then do I have good news for you, I'm happy to say that STC has none of the problems Archie Sonic has or had, which is a breath of fresh air. Now there are some sillier moments here and there, I mean the origins of Sonic and Robotnik here are pretty ridiculous, but it's a small price to pay and can even be charming at times. Plus in earlier issues and throughout the series until later on you get Game Reviews, Articles, and even comics based off of other Sega Games! Like Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin, Wonder Boy, Streets of Rage, and most popular of all in STC...Decap Attack! You get a lot of variety in STC, and it all ends up great overall. The series however ended up suffering a slow death after the last story arc and ended up doomed to reprints of past stories until it's end in issue 223, and most criminal of all STC has never seen any offical release...however... Years ago some fans got together and scanned every single issue and what few specials there were and posted them online, and when their site went down the series lived on from each file sharing and comic reading site, but officially out of publication. Now with many of you I assume who have never read this amazing series or know where to find them...I can't let that happen... https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jurwh3wy4k7yawx/AAAvXGPuL5EKmCCpMBbzm0Hna?dl=0 That's right, I have it, The Complete Series available and ready to read just for you guys! Why else would the title of this be Sonic The Comic: The Complete Series? Right now you can download and read every issue of STC as it was intended, with all bonuses and Special Issues included. I refuse to let the Original Series die out, and you should too! So get on reading and enjoy the canon Sega wants you to forget. But that's not all! Nope, see 10 or so years back fans of STC couldn't let the world they grew up on in The UK die out, so the fans struck back and made their own continuation of STC known as Sonic The Comic Online. http://www.stconline.co.uk/ You can't keep a good series down, so much so that the former creators have even done some work on it as well and gave their blessing to it, making it what many call The Offical Unoffical Continuation of STC that continues on to this day. That is AMAZING to me, this is the canon that refuses to die! I can easily do an analysis on STC and what STC-O has so far, but perhaps that's a time for another day. If I may though, I will say how STC stands up overall, to me this is The Equal to SatAM in terms of importance, quality, and how good it is. I DO NOT say that lightly. I cannot recommend this series more then I already have, and I urge you my fellow Free Scribes to read what you may have missed for so long. To a Free Mobius! [Disclaimer: If Sega ends up somehow re-releasing Sonic The Comic - support the offical release.]
