I wanna scream I told you so to so many people right now, because I honestly thought this is exactly what was happening. Now here's hoping they're starting from square one, sega does NOT get too demanding, and IDW doesn't mess it up by trying to be something it's either not or shouldn't want to be.

I'm both excited and terrified from the anticipation!

I called it before, and many throughout the years and the past several months always thought that if Archie tanked with Sega that they would go over to IDW, with this just being an announcement I'd say it's a great! Now as for what sort of content and what the series will have being that based off of the Old Continuity (which is unlikely), the one somewhat established from the Reboot, or a brand new continuity is something that will be revealed in time. Till then let's wait and see what happens :)

I hope the content of reboot is apart of it to an extent. Just less of the short falls.

I'm really beginning to think SEGA and IDW agreed to this months ago and was trying to close out the last arc (and maybe get to #300?) and finish Mega Drive with Archie as Archie hasnt said themselves the end of the partnership.

Just a theory

Ian Flynn is working on it? Weeeellllll my expectations just plummeted of a cliff!!!

Joking aside, it won't bother me so long as he's not head writer. We've seen his work before and what he can do, and it might be for the best if he holds a position akin to what yardley and baker held with archie, as his work seemed pretty inconsistent when moving from one arc to the next, or drawn out for huge arcs.

One thing this might imply (and hope I'm wrong, but with all my worst case scenarios seeming to be coming true this decade) is that the Freedom Fighters may just show up, and if not them (and this one I hope I'm right about) then the eggbosses may be back and better than before.

Just a quick side note, this thread doesn't turn up in the activity page. Well, the messages don't at least.

But, yeah, Flynn returning was kind of certain. Doesn't mean I wanted him to return, but it was just kind of expected. I think a lot of people would throw a fit if he WASN'T included. But honestly, I don't really want the IDW comics to fall into the same literary trappings that Archie was victim to.

Today at a special ‘Town Hall’ event at New York Comic Con, the future of IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic was made more clear with new details revealed. One of, if not the biggest, announcement at the event was the return of head writer from Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog Comic Ian Flynn to the writing staff. According to Michael Cisneros, Licensing Specialist at SEGA of America, Ian was the first name they had on their list and within “ten minutes” he had his pitches/ideas sent to Joe Hughes and the IDW staff. Tyson Hesse, who drew a commissioned promotional artwork leaked earlier in the week, will also return in some capacity. Hughes also mentioned “other writers and artists” may return as well.

Perhaps the biggest and burning question was the fate of the Freedom Fighters, who have been tied to the Sonic comics since it’s inception. Unfortunately the panel, consisting of Hughes, Cisneros, and Aaron Webber were very vague with their answers. The question was asked by multiple people and the same answer of “stay tuned” was given each time, yet they acknowledged the demand of the fans for the Freedom Fighters though.

IDW Sonic will start fresh from Issue #1, which is set to be released on April 4th, 2018. Hughes and Webber also showed that the comic will be weekly until the first Wednesday in May where it will return to a monthly issue. The mandates that plagued the Archie comic will return but will be “scaled back” so IDW can “tell the best stories possible” and give more freedom than they could in the games. “We’re specifically making this world built in a world IDW controls separate from the games” Aaron mentioned as well but mentioned a tie-in could happen from time to time. A “Sonic Forces” tie-in isn’t in the cards but could still happen.

Multiple times, the panel reiterated that the comics having a fresh start with characters, old ones and new ones made by IDW, and they’re telling brand new stories. The panel asked what types of characters the crowd wanted to see; from annoying sidekicks, to serious characters, and to funny characters. Modern Sonic will be the main focus and there won't be a Classic Sonic in the comic “or the 86 other ones” they joked about. It was also mentioned that they want Sega to trust them first so the first year to not expect any crossovers or a ‘Sonic Universe’ like spin-off comic “just yet.” Restrictions will be scaled back a bit but they are not going to “jump the shark” *coughcoughPenderscoughcough*.

The creative process was mentioned on how the massive collaboration between the writers, the artists, and the editors. It was mentioned that Ian had a ton of ideas when IDW called him.

The question of why Archie Sonic wasn’t unable to reach issue #300. Aaron says that “things happened” on why the Archie era story arc suddenly stopped the way they did, but he says that sometimes these kinds of things happen. “There are reasons – trust us. I wish we could go into more detail but we are unable to. It’s tough for us too.” It’s being argued that there could be legal reasons why they are unable to disclose the final days or Archie Sonic.

Overall, some the pieces of the puzzle were given to us in the sub-hour Town Hall event today. While one of the biggest questions of which Ian would be returning was answered, the fate of the Freedom Fighters was left vague, which infuriated some members of the crowd. The first solicits are due before the end of the year and more information will be released “in due time.”

We will provide updates as soon as we get them regarding IDW Sonic, so stay tuned.

Okay so they're going to make the world separate from the games, good to hear that's great but what's the name of that world? Some people when I caught the stream asked a few good questions but most were senseless, I would have liked to see someone ask if that world would be called Mobius but I get the feeling it would have gotten the same vague answer about the freedom fighters.

Honestly I'm not really impressed but there is some amount of optimism for the book. For one it's a whole new continuity so it's not continuing from before or after the reboot of Archie Sonic's canon. So far that's the only big plus it's got in my book, the rest is sadly too vague until it actually comes out. I do hope they use the basis of Mobius as the world of IDW and include the Freedom Fighters, otherwise it's a real hard sale. If they want it to really be separate from the games they should do that, a lot of people would be happier for it. However while many acclaim in Flynn's return I'm worried about that as it could easily slide to the same funk the old comic did. I for one will give the comic a decent chance about 6 months to a year and see how it comes, I wish them the best but we'll see what happens.

I'll just remain mildly optimistic. This could take Sonic in a refreshing direction. Don't know what of the FFs, but them not being in won't be a dealbreaker. But the Egg Bosses, please please please!

And more content from the games to be used? Y'all know that means Eggman Nega, Honey the Cat, Team Hooligan, Mephiles, Hard-Boiled Heavies, Shade, Mighty and Ray, etc etc, and more can be used?

There was also a question asked about Ken Penders.

"I have no idea who that is."

Sick. Burn.

You can pre-order the first volume now on Amazon for $16 (So the First 4 issues by my guess). It's titled "Fallout" and here's the description:

Join the Blue Blur for brand-new adventures as he and his friends race around the world to defeat the evil Dr. Eggman’s robotic forces!

The evil genius Dr. Eggman has been foiled–but the work of Sonic the Hedgehog isn’t over yet! In the aftermath of the latest epic battle, rogue robots continue to attack small villages around the world. In order to succeed, Sonic will need the help of his friends Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, along with some new and surprising allies. This new collection from acclaimed writer Ian Flynn features the blue blur like you’ve never seen him before. Gotta go fast!

About the Author: Ian Flynn is a freelance writer for multiple forms of media. He’s also “that Sonic guy” as his portfolio of Sonic the Hedgehog work makes abundantly clear. He was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina and is currently based out of Toronto, Ontario, with easy business ties to both sides of the border. In addition to writing, he’s part of a podcast/gaming channel series called the BumbleKast

"New and Surprising Allies" seems interesting though I'm curious if they are keeping it vague until the solicits come out

We got some new news... and it's not necessarily good. Ian Flynn confirmed on BumbleKast that none of his characters from Archie will be returning at all in IDW Sonic.

HOWEVER he has yet to say anything about the Freedom Fighters, who aren't technically Archie characters. I still believe if the Freedom Fighters weren't going to be in it, we would have told about it by now.

Well I guess cassia and clove are out of a job. Same with a lot of egg bosses oh well.

Edit: hope for the freedom fighters? I guess I will have to wait some more.

They weren't written that well so it's not a huge loss.

I provided a better way to have the bosses easily in the WWYDD post.

Hence I said oh well. Still it's more waiting, I haven't been in the loop on twitter because I hardly see any posts in regards to IDW.
